One of the most famous and prolific inventor of all time in the human history who had held a total of 1,093 U.S. patents (1,084 utility patents and 9 design patents) was Thomas Alva Edison. Thomas Edison made and exerted a tremendous influence on our modern lifestyle. Edison is credited for contributing to various and great inventions, including the phonograph, the Kinetoscope, the Dictaphone, the Electric lamp which is particularly the incandescent light bulb, and lastly the autographic printer. He also improved and refined some of his inventions and devices like the telephone by inventing the carbon microphone.
Edison would witness tremendous change during his lifetime. Edison invented and refined devices that made a profound impact on the simple living of people. The most famous of his inventions was the incandescent light bulb which was invented in the year 1878. This was revolutionizing indoor lighting boon to the world.
Thomas Alva Edison was widely known as America’s most prolific inventor, even after his death in the year 1931. He held a total of 1,093 U.S. patents (1,084 utility patents and 9 design patents). In 2003, his patent count was just exceeded by a Japanese inventor named as Shunpei Yamazaki.
He was born on 11 February 1847 in Milan city of Ohio. When Edison was 7 years old his family moved to Michigan. Edison lived here until he struck out on his own at the age of sixteen.
As an inventor, many of have a great education and focus in education but Edison had very little formal education as a child, attending school only for some months. He was taught reading, writing, and arithmetic by his mother, but was always a very curious child and he use to improve him by reading more books. This belief of self-improvement remained throughout his life.
In his school, his teacher once said that he was “too stupid to learn anything.” He was fired from his first two jobs for being “non-productive.” As an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at the session of inventing the incandescent light bulb. As the teacher said in school he was a sick boy as a child and a slow learner. His mother was a former school teacher and thought otherwise; she thought that Thomas needed proper guidance so that he can be more confident and learn anything easily. So his mother pulled him out of the school before he was expelled from school.
Edison began working at an early age of his life. At the age of 13, he took a job as a newspaper boy who was selling newspapers and candy on the local railroad.
As reading more books he seems to have spent much of his free time reading scientific and technical books, and also had the opportunity at this time to learn how to operate a telegraph. By the time he was 16 years old, Edison was proficient enough to work as a telegrapher for full time by just reading books and some knowledge.
The development in the telegraph was the 1st step in his communication revolution. And by fortune, the telegraph industry was expanded rapidly in the second half of the 19th century. This rapid growth gave Edison a chance to travel the country, see the country, and gain some sort of experience. Edison worked in some number of cities throughout the United States before arriving in Boston city in the year 1868.
Now here comes his life’s turning point where Edison began to change his profession from telegrapher to inventor. He received his 1st patent for an electric vote recorder machine, a device which intended for use by elected bodies such as Congress to speed the voting process in less time. But unfortunately, this invention was a commercial failure of Edison but then after Edison resolved that some problem’s in the future he would only invent things that he was certain the public would want.
