ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) made a partnership with Bharat Biotech to developed Rotavirus Covaxin. Bharat Biotech became the first Indian company to isolate a strain virus of covid-19. It also became the first Indian company to develop a vaccine for Covid 19 in India. Bharat Biotech is a WHO’s (World Health Organization’s) prequalified provider of vaccines for polio.
Bharat Biotech International Limited was started by Dr. Krishna Ella in the year 1996. The company has total 433 Patents and 160 patents owned by this company so far. Bharat Biotech has a worldwide presence in more than 123 countries on the planet. It was established in Genome Valley of Hyderabad.
Bharat Biotech FY20 profits have jumped 35% to Rs 1,079.7 crore, the net profit rose 200% to Rs 298 crore. The company will invest up to Rs. 200 crores in FY2021 and FY2022 for the development of a Greenfield facility for a Covid-19 vaccine.

Bharat Biotech International Limited is an Indian biotechnology company. The Biotech company was started by Dr. Krishna M. Ella and Mrs. Suchitra Ella in Hyderabad. Dr. Krishna Ella was born in a poor family of farmers in Tamil Nadu, India.
Dr. Ella won a scholarship and went to study in the United States. He gets his Ph.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. They also worked as a professor and research scientist at the Medical University of South Carolina.
In 1996, Dr. Ella came back to India. After returning back home he along with his wife started a small lab. The small lab named Bharat Biotech in Hyderabad in the year 1996.
In just 3 years since its start, Bharat Biotech launched the most affordable Hepatitis B vaccine in the world priced at only rupees 10 per vial.
In the year 1999, Bharat Biotech was the only company in India that came forward to partner with the Indian Government. The Indian government made a partnership with Bharat Biotech to produce Rotavirus Vaccine. Rotavirus is the most common cause of Diarrhea in India that kills more than 2.15 lakh children each year. The Rotavirus vaccine was released in the year 2015 and the price tag was $1 only.
The only reason why Bharat Biotech stands in the competition was their affordability of vaccines. They were the only supplier who was supplying vaccines at the lowest price competing with competitors like GSK and Merck. The competitors were releasing the same Rotavirus vaccine for $200 per dose.
In 2010, the company launched India’s first cell culture-based H1N1 (Human Inactivated Influenza A virus) Swine flu Vaccine.
Bharat Biotech is also the 1st company on the planet to build up and launch a vaccine for the Zika Virus.
The company developed India’s native COVID-19 vaccine COVAXIN in partnership with the (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV). Bharat Biotech became the first Indian company to isolate a virus strain of covid 19. It also became the first Indian company to develop a vaccine for Covid 19 in India.
